Well Said Wednesday: "You Made That Deadline Up"
Some days, the only thing louder than my inner critic (aka Roger Ebert) is my inner snarky teen (aka Liz Lemon, the high school years).
She sees the writing blocks I have on my calendar, and the content I plan to work on in that timeframe.
She rolls her eyes.
"That's not a real. You made that deadline up," she deadpans and slinks off to do something else.
She's not entirely wrong.
Most of us don't have a bottomless well of self-motivation. When we're not feeling it, self-imposed deadlines are like jumbo shrimp -- the ultimate oxymoron. That's when you need a back-up plan.
Co-working is a powerful back-up plan.
When I meet up with fellow entrepreneurs live (back when that was a thing) or virtually, the energy changes. We have accountability. We have focus. Writing doesn't seem like such a slog.
We declare what we're working on. We set a timer. We get.writing.done.
Then we laugh at the end of the session, because co-working *shouldn't* work, but it does. It's a centering point that helps us cut through our own bullsh*t and focus.
Or maybe it's because misery loves company.
No matter. It works.
That’s why I created On Fridays, We Write: Virtual Co-working, Accountability and Connection. It’s a three-hour block every Friday where a group of us bask in the collective energy of declaring what we’re working on, being heads down doing the work for three 45-minute sprints, then celebrating our accomplishments.
Wanna give it a try?
Get yourself in the October session by signing up today. Once the month’s sessions start — this Friday — you have to wait until the next month to join in.
But don’t dawdle. Registration closes at midnight, Thursday, October 1 — that’s tomorrow, people!
And if you’re thrifty, October offers five sessions for the price of four :-)
What do you have to lose…other than a few to do list items?
